"Dan Eldon, who was only 22 when he was chased down and killed by an angry mob in Somalia, was one of the youngest photographic stringers in Africa. But his journalistic work, which had appeared in Time and Newsweek, showed only a small part of his talent.
"Eldon excelled as an artist in his collages, which combined his photographs of Africa with paint, pastiche, pop culture images, advertising, and official documents. The Journey Is the Destination collects pages from the 17 scrapbooks that held his art. Chronicling his work from age 14 through his death at 22, this volume is startling not only in the intensity and thoughtfulness of the pages, but also in the fact that someone so young could have this kind of artistic depth and insight."
"Peace and the survival of life on earth as we know it are threatened by human activities that lack a commitment to humanitarian values. Destruction of nature and natural resources results from ignorance, greed and lack of respect for the earth's living things.
"Our ancestors viewed the earth as rich and bountiful, which it is. Many people in the past also saw nature as inexhaustibly sustainable, which we know is the case only if we care for it. It is not difficult to forgive destruction in the past that resulted from ignorance. Today, however, we have access to more information, and it is essential that we re-examine ethically what we have inherited, what we are responsible for, and what we will pass on to coming generations.
"As people alive today, we must consider future generations: a clean environment is a human right like any other. It is therefore part of our responsibility towards others to ensure that the world we pass on is as healthy, if not healthier, than we found it."

No thought should ever be illegal. To make a thought illegal in a society in any way is a method of control.
Do you want to be controlled?
Are you in denial about the degree to which you are now, presently controlled?
Do as I say.
Think as I think.
Or we will put you away.
How do you like me, now?
A free and open media is essential to a society that does not wish to be controlled. Any and all attempts to supress this ideal is equivalent to the first stages of cancer--you remember the motto of cancer, don't you?--kill or get bit, to death.
Memewar wil replace old-skool physical warfare--and it will be pro-active in this refrain: "No more war." Listen: our society is one big brain. The part presently pulling the axon strings is deliberately keeping much of us in the non-know . . . due to previous stages of enlightenment--a highly debilitating dis-cause.
Why, for that last paragraph alone I could be put on The List at the Forces of Pentagon and Petroleum [Tom Robbins' phrase]. The world needs better engines: Geniuses Needed: Apply Now.
Quarks power the universe, and don't let the multiverse forget it.
So anyway, we all need to be researching Goebbels these days to let us in on the current practices of the present Govt Sold To The Highest Bidder which is presently doing precisely what that Bidder wants: practicing Mind Control and Police State.
American Police are unmistakably using Police State tactics in their current clampdown of the New Wave of Global-Modern Activists, and the Big Media is in cahoots. Fight word lines: Burn Your Own Brain.
>>drmenlo.com: verbal kimchee.<<
So anyway, listen, this is where the smart people step in: like fucking Kirk, man, in Star Trek--who always beat the dangers of the new found universe with the powers of his mind only per Roddenberry's original request--You . . . will . . . takeovertheworld. By setting it free! Here's How/Call Now: If you believe that any suppression of human rights including a free society is an ill and wicked thing: then simply pass it on.
. . . taken at the LA Democratic Convention protests.
FROM A FLYER AVAILABLE AT SEATTLE'S HABITAT CAFE:
THEY ARE IN THERE FOR US;
WE ARE OUT HERE FOR THEM
A young man handcuffed crucifixion style to a cell door. The screams and moans of young women echoing through the cell block C. Another young woman dragged naked, bloody through a garbage strewn prison hall. Hunger strikers denied access to water or toilets. Metal handcuffs pounding, smashing the fingers, hand and wrist of prisoners who refuse to be finger printed.
These are the scenes reported by eyewitnesses from Philadelphia's central prison, the Roundhouse, on Friday morning, August 4th. As the Republican Party National Convention left town, over four hundred men and women remained in jail, many for the fourth day.
. . . Guards, police, and administrators continue to attack protestors in jail, seeking to demoralize and divide. Recently released prisoners have reported eyewitness accounts of widespread abuse that can only be described as torture. There are numerous accounts of arrestees who have been isolated, verbally abused, punched, kicked, thrown against walls, bloodied, and dragged naked across floors, in once instance through a 'trash trough' containing refuse, spittle and urine. There has been a reported sexual assault by a female officer who pulled and twisted a prisoner's penis. Seven witnesses saw one woman dragged naked and bleeding. Diabetics, epileptics, and asthmatics continue to be denied medication. Trauma and psychological stress are evident.
THIS JUST IN: following the arrest of 70 puppeteers at a puppetmaking workshop in Philadelphia this past week, police and the FBI have significantly downgraded the national status of puppets to PUBLIC ENEMY #1.
ANTI-PUPPET HYSTERIA IS SWEEPING THE NATION!!!
Sez John and Jane Q. Public: "If we see any o' dem troublemaking puppets come our way we wills blow thems back to Russia where they came from, I reckon!" Senator Jesse Helms: "Declaring a National Martial Law against puppets seems like the only logical thing for an honest America to do!--are you looking down my blouse!?" His aide amends: "Of course, this legislation refers only to the more nefarious category of puppets known as the 'Hippie Puppets' . . . 'Faith-Based Puppets' are still ok . . . " A brazen, locked-out Pacifica reporter asks: "What about a Nader puppet?" He is immediately arrested.
Meanwhile, in California, a clearly-shaken Henson Camp are preparing their puppets for a speedy departure. Sez Henson Spokesperson Carla J. Saunders: "They said we could keep them all if we put them into priest and nun outfits, but we just can't do that . . . so we're all hitting the underground puppet railway for a while . . . Gonzo has already agreed to be the conductor, bless his furry little heart . . . "
Representatives for Big Bird, on the other hand, are not so sure: "Well, last we saw, he was dressed all in black, carrying a helluva big backpack and on his way to LA--and that's all we can really say at this point."
. . . I was taking a nap once in my bedroom when I was still in early elem. . . . my Mom, for some reason, was in the room at the time. I woke up and sat on the edge of the bed and very groggily but pointedly began putting on my socks and shoes. My Mother asked me, "Where are you going?" I said: "West."
". . . Party planners also must agree to allow liquor agents and police to enter the property to enforce state liquor laws, a requirement that bothers the American Civil Liberties Union and others . . . "--yet the title to this article is a very rah-rah sounding "Ohio Cracks Down on Keggers" . . . as if 'keggers' were responsible for oh, say--10 million child-deaths like the US is responsible for in Iraq? . . . link thanks to Brian Mars.
Please call Philadelphia officials to demand release of prisoners!
Hundreds of demonstrators were arrested at the Republican Convention protests and are now being held in two Philadelphia jails. They are slowly being processed amid reports of brutality, beatings, refusal of medical treatment, no access to lawyers or phones, and detention as long as 60 hours without arraignment. Many are practicing jail solidarity and 150 are on hunger strike.
These activists URGENTLY need SUPPORT!! Call these officials and let them know that you demand the release of those inside the jails.

Please call the Philadelphia Police Complaint Line, 215-686-3991, to demand
the release of over 400 people arrested in yesterday's demonstration against
the prison-industrial complex, some of them Bostonians.
According to the Philadelphia Independent Media Center (www.phillyimc.org):
"PDAG legal reports that 450 activists were arrested today. 425 are being
kept at the Roundhouse Philadelphia Prison. 25 are being kept separately at
Holmesburg Prison on Northeast Philadelphia. Activists being detained at the
Roundhouse are engaging in a hunger strike, and are demanding equal
treatment, that the charges against them be dropped, and immediate release.
There are numerous reports of ongoing police brutality...."
PDAG is Philadelphia Direct Action Group.
Philadelphia police also raided and closed a puppet-making workshop
yesterday, initially without a warrant. All 70 people inside were arrested.
We try to print a klang tabloid run of about 1000 per month and distribute in tattoo parlors, hair salons, barber shops--places where people have to sit for a while. Readers don't seem to read in coffee shops in Seattle except for Dizzie's out on 90th and Aurora, an ex-biker bar turned biker expresso bar. The place is filled with bikers and locals talking, reading & playing pool; the bartender actually shouts: "klangs here!" when we drop off.
